Busy Notes
Busy notes are neither cards, nor letters, but both.

A BusyNote with envelope
Take a piece of fair quality A4 paper, fold it into quarters, print a picture on it and you have a Busy Note. Just write "Greetings from ..." or write down the first instalment of your life history...there is room for either. A few words need not look lonely, or a lot of stuff can be written on a sheet of A4.

Job done
Using your own handwriting to communicate with someone can be hugely more appreciated ~ more satisfying ~ more gratifying ~ more effective ~ more memorable ~ more apologetic ~ more impressive ~ anything rather than pressing keys and consigning mere words to the ether. How about something like this

Congratulations on passing your test

One of the beauties of a BusyNote is that you do not have to write much. You are conveying your thoughtfulness, and maybe the image is appropriate for the situation.
Just the job for times when an expensive greetings card is over the top and
just the ticket for times when a formal business letter is over the top.
